ABOUT

Welccome to The Old URC a piece of history that spans over 350 years.

The history of The Old URC dates back to 1654.  As the "Penruddock Presbyterian Meeting House" Richard Gilpin of nearby Greystoke Parish Church gathered a congregation.  The church became Nonconformist and between the years 1662 - 1672 worshipped in secret, until the Act of Toleration in 1689.  It is possible that there may have been a place of worship from that date, but the first trust deed is in the year 1712.  The present building was probably erected in 1789 on the original site, but some portion of it may belong to the earlier sanctuary, particularly the walls.   The porch was added in 1864, the old three-decker pulpit taken away and the church re-seated.

A vibrant hub of worship until 2011, this church discovered a remarkable rebirth in 2017 under the proud ownership of Dylan and Debbie. Fast forward to 2023, and this beloved space has undergone a metamorphosis into a residential property, carefully preserving its Grade II-listed features. Several original box pews, with their historical charm and distinctive features, have been seamlessly incorporated into the design, ensuring that the spirit of the church lives on in its new role as a unique and cherished home.

The local community response to The Old URC's transformation is overwhelmingly positive. As the church had sat unused for several years, its revival has sparked a renewed sense of vitality in the area. The endeavour to repurpose the church into a residential property has been met with curiosity and anticipation.

The transformation has brought about a sense of pride, a once-neglected landmark being revitalized and contributing to the local landscape. The beauty of the surrounding countryside, visible through the church's windows and from the garden, fills us with joy and pride.
